Feasibility Study
Berkhamsted Castle Trust has been exploring ideas for enhancing the public realm within and around the ancient deer park, as part of a project to re-connect the Castle as its key gateway. Today this area is divided into many privately owned fields, but we have been looking into possible ways to mark this historical boundary along the existing public footpaths and enhance the visitor experience in the area around the Castle.
Berkhamsted Castle Trust have been working with award-winning environmental consultancy Land Use Consultants (LUC) on exploring the potential for celebrating the rich historic and cultural heritage of the landscape linked to Berkhamsted Castle.
After a public consultation in 2024, LUC have delivered a feasibility study, funded by a grant from the Marchus Trust and the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
The study outlines a number of ideas for enhancing the surroundings of Berkhamsted Castle, identifies stakeholders (residents, landowners, visitors, organisations etc) and sets out the next steps in this project, including. The study examines a number of potential options, including:
- Visitor parking
- Siting a Castle visitor centre
- Creating new access routes into the Castle
- Traffic calming around the Castle
We have produced detailed feasibility study summary documents which are available to download below.
