Castle Fields are under threat
Our green space was included in Dacorum Council’s list as a possible site for housing / parking.
It has since changed hands with several developers and with Government’s ambition to build on green land Castle Fields could be lost.
£500k needed to Save Castle Fields
This beautiful space has been temporarily saved via Berkhamsted Castle Trust who purchased the land through a loan.
Community support is needed to repay the loan and ensure the land is protected.
Save our history
The fields are the site of the great siege of 1216 prompted by the annulment of Magna Carta. The Castle Fields were used by the invading French Army to bombard the Castle with huge catapult machines - the first trebuchets used in England.
Castle Fields were also part of one of the earliest royal deer parks and for about 350 years kings and nobles would start their hunts here.
Save our wildlife
Saving this land gives an opportunity to enhance ecology and secure one of the principal wildlife corridors for the town, maintaining a vital buffer between the fields and Berkhamsted’s built environment.
