At Home with Henry VIII
£16.99

Henry VIII is one of the most recognizable of English monarchs famous for his great weight and his six wives. But what was it really like to be Henry VIII or to be married to him? How did he live and where? Who were his servants and what did they do? What clothes did he and his wives wear how did they entertain themselves and who did they choose to spend time with?Behind the well-known image of Henry in his later years lies a fascinating story of a man driven by private passions—the desire for a legitimate son and heir a compulsion to collect wealth and to spend it—and by the need to control the constant power struggles among his courtiers. Rose Shepherd reveals the day to day life of Henry VIII and his wives: from the young Henry married to Katharine of Aragon enjoying hunting dancing and music; his marriage to the original power-dresser Anne Boleyn; happiness at Hampton Court with Jane Seymour; a brief time with Anne of Cleves so crucially misrepresented by the portrait artist chosen to depict her; and the courtly intrigues and loose morality revealed in his marriage to Kathryn Howard; to his later years of increasingly ill health with Katherine Parr.Key Features:192 pagesHardbackPublished in 2014

Hadrians Wall
£18.99

Located at the far-flung and wild edge of the Roman Empire Hadrian's Wall was constructed by Emperor Hadrian in the 120s AD. Vast in size and stretching from the east to the west coast of the northern part of Britannia it is the largest monument left by the Roman empire – all the more striking because it lies so far from Rome. Today it is one of the most visited heritage sites in the country.Yet the story of the Wall is far more than the development of a line of fortifications and the defence of a troublesome imperial frontier. Generation after generation of soldiers served there with their families as well as traders and other foreign and local civilians in and around the army bases. The glimpses of this vibrant multinational community in Adrian Goldsworthy's masterly book bring the bare stones to life. Goldsworthy also considers why and how the wall was built and discusses the fascinating history afterlife and archaeology of this unique ancient monument.Key Features:Published- Jan 2018Hardback

Hadrians Wall Operations Manual
£22.99

Hadrian’s Wall is the largest most spectacular historical monument in Britain. Nothing else approaches its vast scale: a land wall running 73 miles from east to west and a sea wall stretching at least 26 miles down the Cumbrian coast. Some of its forts are as large as Britain’s most formidable medieval castles and with its mile towers barracks and soldier’s leisure facilities the extended site allows an astonishingly rich insight into Roman frontier life. For some 300 years around 12000 men primarily from the auxiliary army’s infantry or cavalry manned the wall with a further 8000 in forward forts and in reserve. Some two millennia after its construction there are still mysteries about the wall: its precise route is not known in some locations – particularly in the urban landscape of Carlisle and Newcastle. This book traces the concept construction and purpose of the wall how it was built who worked on it and the lives lived on and around it from Roman auxiliaries to civilian staff. The outstanding archaeological finds of sandals weapons writing tablets uniform remnants eating implements and personal effects all help to create a picture of living on the wall while stunning aerial shots and matching cutaway illustrations help reconstruct the physical achievement of the structure itself.Key Features:Published May 2018Hardback

Despite Morris' ambitions to be a painter & his latter reputation as a writer poet publisher & political activist it is as a designer that he is most widely known. His style formed a bridge between Victorian and modern composition the emphasis of Morris' timeless style is based on individuality & handcrafted work. Please Note:Fabrics by their nature are flexible during storage humidity and temperature may occasionally affect their shape and also cause creasing. To help a tapestry hang better we recommend using a dry iron on a 'Cotton' setting. Lightly iron the tapestry from the centre towards the edges [on the face]. In very extreme cases the Tapestry can be stretched by pulling the panel gently by hand diagonally.

Bayeux Bell Pull
£50.00

This fine tapestry Bayeux Bell Pull has been faithfully reproduced from various scenes found on the Bayeux Tapestry. Original 11th century. The 230' x 20" of linen is made up of eight lengths. Embroidered in two ply wool using stem & outline stitch for contours. We can distinguish the eight colours used. Applied at random or to emphasize a dramatic effect. In fifty scenes it displays a wealth of subjects 623 humans 202 horses 55 dogs 505 creatures 37 buildings 41 ships 49 trees & nearly 2000 letters. It includes hunting ship building navigation cooking battles & defence work. Many who had taken part in these events were still alive when it was made so accurate depiction is likely. Recent analysis suggests that contrary to past belief that it was probably made at Canterbury being one of Europe's leading embroidery schools. Please note: As this bell pull is hand finished the sizing may differ from piece to piece

Accolade Cushion Cover
£45.00

Add a touch of class to your home with this hand-made Accolade Cushion Cover. In the late Middle Ages the son of a noble would serve first as page then as squire before being made a knight. Knighthood was conferred by the overlord with the accolade (a blow usually with the flat of the sword on the neck or shoulder); in the later period of feudalism the ceremony was preceded by the religious ceremony of a vigil before an altar. A knight fighting under another's banner was called a knight bachelor; a knight fighting under his own banner was a knight bannerette. Knights were ordinarily accompanied in battle by personal attendants (squires and pages) and by vassals (yeoman)and servants. After c.1100 military tenure was generally subject to the law of primogeniture which resulted in a class of landless knights; at the time of the Crusades those landless knights formed the great military orders of knighthood which were religious as well as military bodies. Important among these were the Knights Templars Knights Hospitalers Teutonic Knights Livonian Brothers of the Sword Knights of Calatrava and Knights of Aviz.Edmund Blair Leighton - born September 21 1853 - died September 1 1922. was a British painter while not an official member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood he is often associated with the Pre-Raphaelites and Romantic styles of painting. Leighton was the son of the artist Charles Blair Leighton. He was trained at University College School prior to becoming a pupil at the Royal Academy Schools. He wedded Katherine Nash in 1885 and they had two children a son and daughter. Leighton was a fastidious craftsman producing highly finished decorative pictures. It would appear that he left no diaries and though he exhibited yearly at the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1920 he was never an Academician or an Associate.Leighton is best known for his adorned work commonly depicting medieval chivalry or highly tender moments between couples. As might be expected from his historic paintings a collector of old musical instruments art and furniture. He lived at 14 Priory Road Bedford Park London and died on the 1st September 1922.His popularity today remains strong and his timeless scenes sought after in reproductions.Key Features:Jacquard woven tapestry coverMade in the UKInspired by Edward Blair Leighton

Jousting Knights Wall Tapestry
£150.00

Tournament of Chivalry between a Breton and a Bourbon knight. The medieval joust has its origins in the military tactics of heavy cavalry during the Middle Ages.By the 14th century many members of the nobility including Kings had taken up jousting to showcase their own courage skill and talents. The sport proved just as dangerous for a King as a knight. From the 15th century on jousting became a sport without direct relevance to warfare. This finely detailed Jacquard loom woven tapestry pictures two noble knights ready to joust. A perfect gift for anyone who is interested in the history of our country.Key Features:Hand finished wall tapestryPlease Note:Fabrics by their nature are flexible during storage humidity and temperature may occasionally affect their shape and also cause creasing. Suit of Gothic Armour and Stand
£999.00

Gothic Armour was a popular style of armour in England and Germany during the late 15th Century. It was influenced by the peaks and ridges of Gothic architecture and art of the period and by the 1480's it was considered to be the best armour in Europe. It was worn by knights and nobles on both sides in the Wars of the Roses where it afforded excellent protection against the arrow storms associated with the battles of this period. The Suit of Gothic Armour or "harness" as it was known as is hand crafted from 18 gauge steel and features adjustable leather straps and chainmail skirt. It is mostly but not fully articulated allowing it to be worn for some applications. The legs feature the least degree of articluation and are really designed with display in mind. The upper body arms and helmet are fully articulated. Please note that this armour can only be worn by people of average build. If your waist is over 34" or you are taller than 5'10" this armour will not fit very well if at all. Comes complete with stand. This armour is not suitable for reenactment. Coppergate Helmet
£200.00

This magnificent helmet was found in York in a wood-lined pit with fragments of antler stone glass and iron close to the site where archaeologists had earlier found the remains of Viking settlers. Tests revealed that it was made of iron and copper alloy and dates to the second half of the 8th century. The helmet is stylistically Northumbrian and has many unique details. After its discovery it was reconstructed to its original state by the British Museum. It is known as the Coppergate Helmet after the area where it was found close to the Jorvik Centre. The brass band across the crest bears a Latin inscription: IN NOMINE : DNI : NOSTRI : IHV : SCS : SPS : DI : ET : OMNIBVS : DECEMVS : AMEN: OSHERE : XPI translating as "In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and of the Spirit of God let us offer up Oshere to All Saints. Amen".Our Coppergate Helmet replica is hand crafted from steel and brass with many intricate details that are hand finished after casting - in the same way the original helmet was made over a millennia ago. It features hinged cheek pieces adjustable leather spider lining and chin strap and a butted steel (zinc plated) chainmail 'aventail' to protect the neck. Constructed from 18 gauge steel and not recommended for contact reenactment.

Gallic H Roman Centurion Helmet
£155.00

This style of Roman Legionary Helmet or "galea" dates from the 1st Century BC to the 2nd century AD. It is of the "Imperial Gallic H" type a style influenced heavily by the craftsmen of Gaul (France) This style of helmet was no doubt worn by Roman Legionaries during Julius Caesar's invasion of Britain and was worn by the soldiers that garrisoned Hadrian's Wall. The horsehair crest which runs from side to side indicates that this helmet was worn by a Centurion. Centurions commanded "Centuries" of 80 men but could also command an entire cohort consisting of 6 centuries. The Roman Centurion's Helmet is hand crafted from steel and brass and features hinged cheek pieces and brass decoration. The crest is genuine horse hair and is removable. Comes complete with separate padded lining cap. 18 gauge steel construction.

Gothic Sallet
£130.00

Gothic Armour was a popular style of armour in England and Germany during the late 15th Century. It was influenced by the peaks and ridges of Gothic architecture and art of the period and by the 1480's it was considered to be the best armour in Europe. It was worn by knights and nobles on both sides in the Wars of the Roses where it afforded excellent protection against the arrow storms associated with the battles of this period. The Gothic Sallet is hand crafted from polished steel and features an articulated 'tail' that protects the neck without restricting movement. The visor is also hinged and can be lifted for better vision. The helmet is lined with an adjustable leather spider and features and adjustable leather chin strap. 18 gauge steel construction - not recommended for reenactment.

English Civil War Cavalry Helmet
£100.00

This form of helmet was widely used during the Thirty Years War and English Civil War and was commonly known as a 'Zischagge' in Germany and a 'horseman's pot' or 'three-barred pot' in Britain. The term 'lobster-tailed pot' is widely used in modern scholarship. It was used by cavalry on both sides of the English Civil War including Oliver Cromwell's Ironside cavalry. The common misconception of Cavaliers wearing plumed wide-brimmed hats whilst the Roundheads wore helmets is eloquently disproved by a surviving order signed by Charles I himself for 33 'potts' along with other cavalry armour for the use of his own troop of horse in 1642. Another order this time from the Parliamentarian authorities dating to 1644 for 300 "potts with three barres English" indicates that each helmet no doubt of basic quality cost 7 shillings. The English Civil War Cavalry Helmet is hand crafted from polished steel and features an articulated tail to protect the neck hinged cheek pieces and a tilting visor with 3 bars to protect the face from sword slashes. 18 gauge steel construction - not recommended for reenactment.

Zinc Plated Mail Coif
£39.00

Mail was thought to have been invented by the Celts. The earliest example was found in a Celtic Chieftain's burial in Romania. It was a popular form of defence for the warrior elite of the Viking and Early Medieval periods. It is often (wrongly) referred to as chainmail but this terminology was first introduced by Sir Walter Scott in 1822 in his novel "The Fortunes of Nigel". In the medieval period it was simply known as "Mail". The coif was designed to protect the head neck and shoulders against damage from bladed weapons. It was very effective at doing so - the Royal Armouries have conducted tests with well-made mail and concluded that "it is almost impossible to penetrate using any conventional medieval weapon". The Mail Coif is constructed by hand from hundreds of steel rings and will fit all but the largest of heads. The rings are zinc plated to provide a shiny maintenance free finish that is resistant to rust.Made in England

Morion Helmet
£95.00

The Morion Helmet was popular with the foot soldiers of European armies in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is thought to have originated in Spain and would certainly have been worn by soldiers of the Spanish Armada. This style of helmet is associated with soldiers of the English Civil War where it was commonly known as a "Pikeman's Pot". They were predominantly worn by the soldiers of Cromwell's New Model Army along with breastplates and buff coats. Surviving morions from the siege of Colchester Castle in 1648 have been unearthed within its grounds and are now preserved in the castle. Some of the best preserved morions from the English Civil War can now be seen in the Royal Armouries collection in Leeds. The Morion Helmet is hand made from steel and is based on an authentic period design. It is decorated with brass rivets and features an adjustable leather liner.Key Features:Handmade18 gauge steel constructionAdjustable leather linerNot recommended for re-enactment.

Beowulf Helmet
£140.00

Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic poem in Old English and is commonly cited as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature. The full poem survives in the manuscript known as the Nowell Codex and is located in the British Library. It was written in England between the 8th and 11th century by an anonymous Anglo Saxon poet. The manuscript was badly damaged in 1731 in a fire at Ashburnham House where it was held along with a collection of other medieval manuscripts. Beowulf is the name of the hero of the poem. He goes to the aid of the king of the Danes whose great hall is plagued by the monster Grendel. Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands and then slays Grendel’s mother with the sword of a giant that he finds in her lair. The Beowulf Helmet is of late Anglo-Saxon/Viking design. It is constructed from 18 gauge steel with antiqued brass decoration befitting the status on an Anglo-Saxon Hero. It features and adjustable leather liner and buckled chin strap and a zinc plated chainmail aventail to protect the neck.Key Features:Constructed from 18 gauge steelBrass decorationAdjustable leather linerBuckled chin strapThis helmet is not recommended for contact re-enactment

Edward Painted Shield (3 Lions)
£90.00

Edward I was one of England's great warrior kings. He embodied the medieval ideal of kingship as a soldier administrator and a man of faith. He accomplished many military feats during his reign including the conquest of Wales and Scotland (earning him the title "Hammer of the Scots") and participated in the Crusades. His shield features the 3 Lions of England first used by King Richard the Lionheart and in use until the reign of Edward III when it was quartered with the fleurs de lys of France. The Edward Painted Shield is hand painted and lacquered and features leather straps and padding on the back. This item is great for display or for use as a theatrical prop but is not durable enough for re-enactment combat. Roman Tunic
£40.00

The "tunica" was adopted by the Romans in the 3rd century BC and was based on a Greek design. It was made from wool and was worn in one form or another by all classes within Roman society. The level of decoration would normally indicate the status of the wearer. Plain tunics would be worn by soldiers slaves and manual workers and would usually terminate a little above the knee. It was worn as a loose fitting garment (more like wearing a tent than a shirt) and was worn by both genders. Our Roman Tunic is based on an authentic period design and is made from thick wool. It is dyed red indicating that wearer would probably be a soldier (although soldiers were known to have worn a variety of colours including white). Mini Pigface

The Pigface Bascinet helmet or Hounskull (from the German "Hound's Hood") was a popular helmet from the 14th Century as was worn by both English and French knights at famous battles such as Crecy (1346) and Poitiers (1356). A depiction of this style of bascinet can be seen on the monumental brass of Sir Hugh Hastings in St Mary's Church in Elsing Norfolk. This miniature bascinet is hand crafted in steel and brass and has a pivoting visor like the original and comes complete with wooden stand.

Mini Close Helm

The Close Helm first appeared in the 16th century and was still in use during the English Civil War. It was popular both on the field of battle and in jousting tournaments. Stonehenge Mini Keepsake - Grey
£2.00

Stonehenge is one of Britain's greatest national icons symbolizing mystery power and endurance. Its original purpose is unclear but some have speculated that it was a temple made for the worship of ancient earth deities. Others claim that it was a sacred site for the burial of high-ranking citizens from the societies of long ago.Started approximately 5000 years ago as a large earthwork; a bank and ditch arrangement called a henge Stonehenge was finally completed around 1500 BC with 50 ton stones from the Marlborough Plains used to make the outer ring that stands today. This beautiful Stonehenge Mini Keepsake is carefully crafted from a hard-carved original and then lovingly hand-finished in Gloucestershire England.Designed exclusively for Stonehenge and English Heritage this miniature keepsake makes the perfect souvenir of one of the world's most famous prehistoric monuments.Key Features:Exclusive to English HeritageHandmade in Gloucestershire UK Also available in another colour

Pompeii Pugio Dagger
£85.00

The Pugio was a soldier's dagger that was used as a sidearm by Roman Legionaries and Auxiliaries at the time of the Roman Conquest of Britain. It seems likely that is was designed predominantly as a thrusting weapon in much the same way as the larger 'Gladius' sword. It is understood that Pugio daggers were used in the assassination of Julius Caesar. This well made replica was most likely used by an officer or Centurion on account of the ornate brass decoration. It is hand forged from steel and features a leather lined sheath and sandwiched horn and steel hilt that is often found on surviving pieces.Key Features:The Pompeii Pugio Dagger has a blunt blade and is for display onlyHand forged from SteelLeather lined sheath
