Berkhamsted Castle

Main Entrance

As you enter Berkhamsted Castle, you walk along a path through a gap in the walls into the bailey. This causeway was probably constructed in the late 16th century to facilitate the removal of the  flint and ashlar from the castle to be used in the building of Berkhamsted Place, a mansion erected at the top of Castle Hill.
