Berkhamsted Castle

Visit the remains of the Chilterns’ only Norman castle for a historical tour highlighting its rich Royal past from William the Conqueror onwards. The castle has been the home of the Black Prince, Thomas Becket and Cecily of York, great-grandmother of Henry VIII and mother of Edward IV and Richard III. Learn about the ‘Magna Carta siege’ of 1216, it’s link to Geoffrey Chaucer and its surprising use during World War II. As an add-on, for those physically fit, we will walk to the top of ‘Castle Fields’, recently saved from potential development to remain a green lung for the town, with the best views over Berkhamsted (for those able, as the stope is steep).

The main grounds of the castle are accessible by wheelchair but the outer earthworks and the fields are not.
