News: Berkhamsted Castle - February Newsletter

Hello <<First Name>>

Welcome to the February Castle Fields Newsletter!

Yes, February already! We’re now well into 2026 – time is flying by but the challenge remains, so we’re staying focused on priorities to raise the much needed funds.

New Month …. New Gates!

The new look gates are now installed and most of the debris nearby cleared, a responsibility of the previous owner, which is good news but there is still more clearing needed to fulfil the contract. BCT are liaising with the previous owner to rectify this as soon as possible.

The gates now provide a critical safety net against potential fly-tippers and opportunists, whilstproviding a protective barrier from the road for walkers and pets.

Our thermometer is climbing but we’d like to see it warm up substantially over the coming months to hit our target of £20,000 per month.

Time Is Flying for the Castle Fields Flyers!

Berko Half Marathon and Fun Run, Sunday 1st March 2026

As it’s less than two weeks now until the Berko Half Marathon and Fun Run our team are flat out training despite having to navigate the glorious rain, wind and other elements.

They’ve also been busy flexing their sponsorship efforts and have already raised over £5,000 including gift aid. We can’t wait to be out there to cheer them on from the sidelines but in the meantime any help to get them to our £10,000 target will be much appreciated.https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/castlefieldsflyers

If you or anyone you know may be still be interested in taking part please get in touch with Simon at simon.lewis6@btconnect.com.

Sponsorship Comments

“The view from this place is something amazing to be preserved for everyone in Dacorum.”

We thought this comment from a ‘Flyers’ sponsor summed up exactly why we’re all doing this.

Nature Is Thriving and Surviving in the Fields

Walking the fields today in a rare and welcome splash of sunshine it definitely felt spring-like. It was a joy hearing so much bird song from every angle as well as seeing that the Skylarks haven’t been scared away by the disturbance of the fencing activity.

Reports have also come in that the badger sett in the middle of the fields is active again since the fences have been removed with more trails and paw prints visible.

We’d like to keep this positive outlook by encouraging everyone to take responsibility for their rubbish and dog waste. If no bins are available nearby please encourage field visitors to take it home with them and dispose of it in their grey bin.

Keep On Talking

We’ve been chatting to some of the group organisations in the town to make sure they are aware of our plight and to consider ways we can involve them.

Talks have been given to the Rotary Club and Berkhamsted Citizens Association and one is planned for Inner Wheel so we hope to be able to share news on collaborations over the next few months.

If you are a member of a group who would be interested in finding out more and how they can help please contact James at james.moir@berkhamstedcastle.org.uk

Please drop by for a chat or if you can spare an hour or two to help on the stall, please contact Simon at simon.lewis6@btconnect.com.

Fundraising Info Pack

To encourage donations, we’ve developed a pack of information to answer any questions around how the funds raised are managed, plans to achieve the target and what will happen if we don’t.

Future News

We’ve mentioned there are a lot of other activities underway including new flyers, videos and fundraising events which will be shared widely as soon as details are available. In the meantime please consider these key points about Castle Fields and why we’re striving to Save the Fields:

  • These beautiful fields are part of a unique landscape of great historical significance to Berkhamsted.

  • The fields will remain a bio-diverse open and undeveloped green space, beneficial to the future wellbeing of all Berkhamsted citizens and visitors.

  • Footpaths will remain accessible to the public at all times, combined with some light stewardship and potential grazing.

  • The fields are a key part of a jigsaw in re-connecting the Castle, the town’s greatest asset, with the local community.

  • Owning the fields will give the Castle Trust the platform to further interpret the heritage experience the castle offers to its visitors.

Thanking you always for your support!

Best wishes,

Dr James Moir and the Castle Team
