We want everyone to enjoy a safe visit to Berkhamsted Castle. In the light of the current public health situation, new safety measures are in place. We ask visitors to follow a few simple guidelines:
Keep your distance
Please follow government guidelines on social distancing and hygiene. Keep at least 2 metres apart from other visitors.
If you want to walk on the embankment around the castle moats, please respect the new one-way system. This is because the path is narrow, and if people meet coming in opposite directions, it is impossible to maintain social distancing.
As you enter the main gate, take the steps on the left and follow a clockwise direction.
This only applies for the embankment. You are free to walk around as you please in the rest of the Castle.
The steps up to the top of the Motte are steep and narrow, and social distancing is difficult here. Please check for others on the steps or at the top of the Motte. Please do not climb the steps until they are completely clear.
Berkhamsted Castle is staffed entirely by local volunteers. Due to the fact that most of our volunteers are retired/in the “at-risk” category, we have reluctantly decided that the Visitors’ Room will remain closed until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Make a donation
The closure of the Visitors’ Room will severely limit our ability to generate income/donations to help us to look after the Castle. Please consider making an online donation, or donate using your mobile phone – simply text

We’re monitoring the site and, if we need to, we will change the opening arrangements to ensure the safety of our visitors and local residents.
Enjoy your visit and thank you for your understanding.
