Stonehenge Bronze Age Sword

This was the weapon of the tribal chief a hero amongst his people. In peace times he directed harvest settled arguments and ordered the buiilding of trackways and temples. In war he led the free men of his tribe into battle. After his death he was laid to rest often with his sword in a chamber under the ground called a barrow which can still still be seen in many parts of Britain today. Neolithic Hunters Spear
£10.50

Stone Age spears were tools for hunting animals. The skills needed to make this tool were developed over many many generations. A thin but strong tree branch was heated by a fire to become flexible then it was straightened by eye to make a smooth shaft for the spear. Next a flintstone was knapped (pressure flaked) by pressing a piece of horn or antler along the edges with great skill. Finally the shaft was bound to the flintstone head with leather or sinew and at times it was also glued in place with tree sap or pitch (thick natural tar). A great educational aid or accessory to an historical dressing up costume.Key Features:Wooden toy spearMade from wood and hessian from sustainable sourcesHandmade in England just 18 miles from Stonehenge

Pugio Dirk Sword
£7.50

Recreate the heroic battles of the past with this Pugio Drik Sword. The pugio was quite different from other blades issued to Roman soldiers at the time of their invasion of Britain in 43AD. This dirk had been part of legionary equipment for hundreds of years as it was the ideal shape it had no need to be changed. Many a pugio dirk like this was the saviour of an all but defeated roman legionary (when he lost his gladius sword) but this was more than a weapon of last defence; it was the soldier’s marching-camp handy tool. We do not know why but after about 180AD only senior officers from Centurion up are seen in carvings carrying pugios on their belts. The blade is engraved with the words ‘Vallum Hadrianus’ the Latin for Hadrian’s Wall making it the perfect souviner of your trip to the historic site.Key Features:Exclusive to English HeritageWooden SwordEngraved with Vallum Hadrianus
