UPDATED 23 mARCH 2020
Coronavirus / COVID-19
In light of recent experience, and following the latest government recommendations, English Heritage has now decided that Berkhamsted Castle should remain CLOSED to the public until further notice in order to protect public health and help prevent the further spread of Coronavirus.
Our first priority, as Trustees of Berkhamsted Castle Trust, is the health and wellbeing of all our volunteers and visitors. I hope you can understand why, in conjunction with English Heritage, we have taken this unprecedented step. Please do not ignore the closure signs and do not attempt to enter the Castle site for any reason.
We would really appreciate your continued support in these challenging times. Our visitors make such a vital contribution to every aspect of our work, and play a crucial role in keeping Berkhamsted Castle safe for this and future generations. The donations and purchases normally made in our visitors’ room when the site is open allow us to continue critical preservation and maintenance work at our site, as well as undertake key research and education work. Closure of the Castle for the foreseeable future will severely impact this. May we please encourage you, therefore, to continue supporting us by making a donation online at
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Castle again soon, and we will let you know about our plans for reopening as soon as we are able. Until then, I hope that you and those close to you keep healthy and safe.
With my best wishes,
Adrian A. Barham
